This salad has been my favorite for a long time. It is filling yet refreshing, especially in the summer. There is no need for a separate dressing, and it can be made hours before serving, making it an ideal choice for a potluck or a picnic. Recently, I served this salad at a preshow picnic at the Hollywood Bowl, and it was a big hit with my friends. Makes about 8 cups.—DT

There is no hard-and-fast rule for exactly which veggies or herbs to use in this recipe, although I do like this version very much. Go ahead and use your favorite no-oil dressing, your preferred frozen vegetables (or, you know, whatever is actually in your freezer tonight), and try other fresh herbs, such as tarragon or chives for a change.
