Drowning of Protestants - 1641
- File Size:
- 98 KB
Shown here is a depiction of the murder by Irish Catholics of approximately one hundred Protestants from Loughgall Parish, County Armagh, at the bridge over the River Bann near Portadown, Ulster. This atrocity occurred at the beginning of the Irish Rebellion of 1641. Having held the Protestants as prisoners and tortured them, the Catholics drove them "like hogs" to the bridge, where they were stripped naked and forced into the water below at swordspoint. Survivors of the plunge were shot.

The author believes that Roman Catholicism is un-American, and its polity and spirit are antagonistic to our free institutions. It has made a murderous assault upon our public schools, degraded our morals, seeks to destroy our liberties-both secular and religions-to overthrow the freedom of the press, and has made war upon the universal reading of the Bible.

.. Can they teach that the judgment of the Bishop of Rome is superior to God's judgment ? ... I constantly affirm that if the Bishop of Rome sin against his brethren, and, though often admonished, do not hear the Church. he, the Bishop of Rome, I say, is by God's command to be held as a heathen man and a publican. For the higher is the rank the graver is the fall, But if he think us unworthy of his communion for this reason, that none of us will consent to believe contrary to the Gospel, he cannot on that ground separate us from the communion of Christ,"-GERBERT (Pope Sylvester II. t A.D. 1003), to Segwin, Archbishop of Sens.

Catholic emancipation was, in the year 1798, the cry of those men, whose object, it has been since ascertained, was nothing less than to kindle the flames of rebellion in that country; yet it was acknowledged by those men themselves that not one of them was a friend to, or cared a farthing for Catholic emancipation, although that cry had been much the means for exciting the feelings and producing the most disastrous consequences upon the people of Ireland. In our won day the cry for civil and religious liberty has, as your lordships will recollect, been mixed up with the folly of universal suffrage, and all the mischief of radical reform.
